More federal construction procurements could be subject to Canadian-supplier and Canadian-content preferences following an expansion of the federal government’s Buy Canadian procurement rules.
Effective June 15, the threshold for the Policy on Prioritizing Canadian Suppliers and Canadian Content in Strategic Federal Procurements dropped from $25 million to $5 million. The federal government says the change will bring approximately five times more procurements within the scope of the policy. The policy gives preference to Canadian suppliers and bids with greater Canadian content in applicable federal procurements.
Separate requirements introduced in December 2025 also require Canadian-produced steel, aluminum and wood products to be used, where applicable, in federal construction contracts valued at $25 million or more. The measures are part of the federal Buy Canadian Procurement Policy Framework intended to increase domestic participation in government supply chains.
