The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) Educational Trust will host a fundraising gala for the Manuel Fine Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund on Sept. 9 at the Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto overlooking Lake Ontario.
Established in 2013, the scholarship fund honours Manny Fine (1929–2018), a longtime leader in the deep foundations industry and a dedicated supporter of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI). Throughout his 24 years of service to DFI, Fine held numerous leadership roles including trustee, president, executive director, managing editor of Deep Foundations magazine and publisher of the DFI Journal.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, Fine spent more than 23 years with the Bermingham Group of Companies, serving as president of Berminghammer Corporation Limited and vice-president of Bermingham Construction Limited. He also served as executive director of the Heavy Construction Association of Toronto, the Heavy Construction Association of Ontario and the Ontario Association of Foundation Specialists. In addition, he was an active member of Professional Engineers Ontario, the Canadian Geotechnical Society, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada.
“We are really excited to be hosting this gala in Toronto in support of the Manuel Fine Scholarship Fund. Started by the Ontario Association of Foundation Contractors and the Heavy Construction Association of Toronto, the fund has awarded 20 scholarships since 2016 for a total of $57,500 to support students pursuing engineering degrees in Ontario,” says Shawna Munn, P.Eng., Aecon and chair of the fundraising dinner. “Please save the date and join us for an evening of music, food, a charity silent auction/raffle and great company in support of DFI’s continued work to support engineering students in Canada.”
The scholarship program, which supports civil engineering students attending Ontario universities, will begin accepting applications this fall.
