In-water construction is underway on the Port of Montreal’s Contrecœur expansion project, marking the start of a major construction phase for the future container terminal. Initial work includes construction of a stone working jetty that will provide crews and heavy equipment, including a 300-tonne crane, with access to the work zone. More than 250,000 tonnes of locally sourced stone have been delivered for the jetty and fill required for the future wharf.
Sheet piles for the wharf have also been delivered, while deliveries of steel casing piles manufactured in Saint-Félix-de-Kingsey began Aug. 17. Wharf construction is scheduled to begin this fall with installation of a combined wall of steel casing piles and sheet piles.
Construction is being carried out by Constructeurs Terminal de Contrecœur Grand Projet, a consortium of Aecon and Pomerleau. The new terminal is expected to be fully operational by 2030, with capacity to handle 1.15 million 20-foot equivalent units annually.
