Canada’s deep foundations market has a new steel piling supplier. Salit Piling and Shoring, a new division of fifth-generation, family-owned Salit Steel, launched this spring with a goal of bringing dependable supply, technical expertise and a relationship-driven approach to the piling and shoring sector.

Based in Cambridge, Ont., Salit Piling and Shoring is backed by Salit Steel’s more than 120 years of experience delivering steel solutions across North America. The company’s entry into the piling market comes at a time when contractors are facing changing supplier options and continued demand for steel products across infrastructure, transportation, energy, industrial and other construction projects.

Leading the new division is General Manager John Mitchell, an industry veteran with 40 years of experience in the piling sector. Mitchell joined Salit Piling and Shoring after a 39-year career with sheet piling supplier Samuel Roll Form Group. Mitchell says Salit Piling and Shoring is a natural extension of Salit Steel’s network of specialty steel companies.

While the piling division is new, Mitchell emphasizes that it is backed by an established organization with extensive steel expertise, strong purchasing power and a deep understanding of the construction industry.

“Customers benefit from Salit’s purchasing strength, inventory management, logistics capabilities, technical services culture and reputation for outstanding service and value,” said Mitchell. “Salit Steel already supports commercial, residential, industrial, infrastructure and institutional projects with products including rebar, beams, bars, plate, mesh, mechanical tube and specialty reinforcement. The new division extends that platform into piling and shoring, allowing customers to access another critical category of construction steel through a company they already know and trust.”

Salit Piling and Shoring’s product offering includes hot-rolled and cold-formed sheet piling, H-bearing piles, wide flange beams, pipe piles, piling connectors, corners, caps, tie rods, walers, fasteners, structural components and other piling accessories. Mitchell says the company’s products and services are suited to a broad range of deep foundation projects in the energy, infrastructure, transportation and heavy industrial sectors. Salit Piling and Shoring offers both standard inventory and tailored solutions to meet specific project and jobsite requirements.

“The business will emphasize access to commonly used piling profiles and accessories, custom and ready-to-ship solutions, knowledgeable support for product selections and careful attention to delivery,” said Mitchell.

A foundation of experience

Mitchell’s experience in the piling industry will play a central role as the new division establishes itself in the Canadian market.

“My decades of piling industry experience will help shape the division around what customers actually need in the field: practical answers, fast response times, dependable inventory, accurate documentation and an understanding of how schedule pressure affects every decision,” he said. “My experience also reinforces the importance of working closely with contractors and engineers early, so the product solution supports the design, the installation method and the realities of the jobsite requirements.”

“Contractors and engineers are looking for suppliers who are reliable, responsive and knowledgeable. They need accurate information, competitive pricing, dependable availability, clear communication and materials that arrive when promised.”

He is supported by a young team that will benefit from his industry knowledge and experience as the business works toward becoming a go-to Canadian supplier for steel piling solutions. For Mitchell, the division’s approach will be rooted in the same customer-first philosophy that has helped establish Salit Steel’s reputation.

“The company has built its reputation on strong relationships, outstanding customer service and delivering value, and those principles will guide the piling division from the start,” he said. Salit’s goal is to develop long-term relationships with customers and provide the information, products and support needed to help projects move forward.

“Contractors and engineers are looking for suppliers who are reliable, responsive and knowledgeable. They need accurate information, competitive pricing, depend able availability, clear communication and materials that arrive when promised,” Mitchell said. “They also value suppliers who understand how product choices affect installation, schedule, design intent and overall project risk. In short, they want a partner who can support the project, not simply take an order.”

Entering at the right time

Mitchell believes the timing is right for a new steel piling supplier in Canada, particularly as the market adjusts to changes among established suppliers.

“Canada continues to invest in infrastructure, transit, housing, industrial development, energy and marine work, all of which rely on reliable foundation and shoring solutions,” Mitchell said. “At the same time, contractors are looking for suppliers who can help reduce uncertainty around availability, delivery and technical fit.”

He says Salit Steel has a history of expanding into new products and markets when customers need additional options. The company sees an opportunity to apply that approach to the piling and shoring market. “The timing is right with two large players recently exiting the space, and because the market needs a new, financially strong supplier with proven inventory discipline, practical product knowledge and the backing of an established steel organization,” Mitchell said.

Looking ahead, Mitchell expects the Canadian steel piling market to become increasingly demanding as infrastructure investment, urban development and climate resilience projects continue to drive construction activity. Constrained urban jobsites and increasingly complex project requirements could also create greater demand for efficient deep foundation solutions.

“Customers will expect suppliers to be more responsive, more technically capable and better prepared from an inventory standpoint,” Mitchell said. “Salit Piling and Shoring plans to play the role of a dependable Canadian partner that helps raise expectations for service, availability and practical support in the market.”

For Salit Piling and Shoring, entering the Canadian piling market is about more than filling a gap in the supply chain. It is about building a long-term presence in an industry where reliability, responsiveness and technical knowledge matter on every project.

With the resources of Salit Steel behind it and Mitchell’s decades of piling experience guiding the team, the new division is positioning itself to support contractors and engineers from product selection through delivery. As Canada continues to invest in infrastructure, transportation, energy and development projects, Salit Piling and Shoring is betting that a strong combination of steel expertise, dependable supply and customer-focused service will help it earn a place in the country’s deep foundation market.
