Nova Scotia Power is planning shoreline stabilization work at the Tufts Cove Generating Station in Halifax Harbour, where existing steel sheet-pile retaining structures have deteriorated over time. The generating station is built on infill supported by steel sheet-pile structures that separate the property from the harbour. Rather than remove the existing sheet piles, Nova Scotia Power plans to leave them in place and construct a sloped rock revetment and retaining wall to address the structural integrity of the shoreline.
The revetment will extend approximately 80 metres along the shoreline and 20 metres into the harbour, with an estimated underwater footprint of 1,790 square metres. An existing cooling-water intake within the project area will also be extended.
Federal authorities determined July 16 that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, allowing it to proceed. Construction is planned for October 2026.
