Founded in 2024, Verterra Shoring has quickly established itself as a growing force in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)’s deep foundations and shoring market. What began as a lean operation with a couple of pickup trucks and a small drill has steadily expanded into a company with six drill rigs, a two-acre yard in Etobicoke and the capacity to take on increasingly complex foundation and excavation-support projects.
Headquartered in Mississauga, Ont., Verterra’s team brings more than 25 years of combined experience to projects across the GTA. The company provides shoring, foundation solutions and design-build services for projects ranging from smaller developments to large scale infrastructure work. Its core capabilities include caisson drilling, caisson cutoff walls, design-build shoring systems, micropiling and other deep foundation services. Verterra has also developed experience with large shoring systems and full support-of-excavation walls for challenging sites.
For a relatively young company, that range of work has been central to establishing its reputation. “We are always more than willing to take on very large and complex projects,” said Dave Winter, president of Verterra Shoring. “Even as a smaller company, we’ve proven time and time again that we can handle high stakes work and deliver it with a hands-on approach that has come to define who we are as a company.”

Built for complex ground conditions
Verterra’s project experience extends beyond conventional building foundations. The company has worked on tunnel projects, highway construction and complex permanent tie-backs and soil anchor work – applications where site conditions, sequencing and coordination can have a significant impact on the success of a project.
That experience has helped shape the company’s approach to deep foundations work. Rather than positioning itself around a single type of project, Verterra focuses on understanding the requirements of each client and finding practical solutions that can be carried through from design and pre-construction to installation in the field. The approach is also reflected in the company’s repeat customer model.
“When you work with us, you’re dealing directly with the owners of the business, and the same people you speak with during planning and preconstruction are the ones who show up on site to make sure the work gets done properly.”

“If we have a client who’s building a bridge, we go build that bridge with them,” said Winter. “And if that same client shifts gears and decides their next project is a building, or a completely different type of infrastructure, we follow them there, too, and start working on that. It’s that flexibility that keeps us involved in the projects that matter most to them.”
Verterra’s customer-first focus has enabled the company to extend its reach into a wide range of sectors, including sewage pump stations, condo and rental developments, bridges, retaining walls, commercial buildings, schools, long-term care facilities and more. If there is a project that requires shoring or complex excavation support, Verterra is ready and able to do the job.
The Verterra difference
Verterra has built its business around relationships as much as equipment and technical capabilities. As a smaller company, Verterra devotes significant time and effort to working through ideas, options and challenges with its clients long before a shovel hits the ground. Winter says the company’s hands-on, owner-led approach sets it apart, with clients benefiting from direct involvement from planning through to construction.

“When you work with us, you’re dealing directly with the owners of the business, and the same people you speak with during planning and pre-construction are the ones who show up on site to make sure the work gets done properly,” said Winter. “Our clients have come to value this level of direct hands-on involvement. They recognize that instead of being passed off to a large project team where communication can break down, they’re working with the people who actually understand the job and will be on site to make their project happen.”
In an industry where unforeseen ground conditions and changing site requirements can quickly affect a project, that direct communication can be particularly valuable.
A team built around collaboration
The company’s emphasis on relationships extends beyond its clients. Verterra has also focused on developing a close-knit workplace culture as it grows its workforce.
“We work hard, but we also make time for team building,” said Winter. “People here know where their coworkers live, what’s going on in each other’s lives, and we look out for one another. No one here is a number. We’re all on a first-name basis, and we work together as a real team to pull in the same direction and get the job done.”

That culture is becoming increasingly important as Verterra expands its equipment fleet and takes on larger projects. Maintaining communication between the field and office will be critical as the company grows while continuing to deliver the direct involvement it has built its reputation around.
Growing with purpose
With six drill rigs and up to 40 employees as required, Verterra has grown significantly from its early days while staying grounded in the values that shaped the company. Its next chapter is about building on that momentum through strategic, organic growth and taking on increasingly complex projects across the GTA.
For Verterra, growth is not simply about getting bigger. It is about strengthening its capabilities while preserving the hands-on approach, close client relationships and commitment to quality that have become central to its success. By growing thoughtfully and staying true to its roots, Verterra is positioning itself for long-term success in the GTA’s deep foundation and shoring market.
