Women Building Futures (WBF), Alberta’s premier organization for pre-trades training for women, is pleased to announce a new partnership with TFL Industrial, an Edmonton-based steel fabrication, construction and maintenance company.

Like many employers in Alberta, TFL Industrial was looking for innovative ways to attract more people to work in its organization.

“I saw the female labour pool as a great opportunity to bring more welders onto our team and wondered how we could strategically target [female workers] in our recruitment,”said Tanner Stewart, president & CEO of TFL Industrial. Stewart approached WBF to see if there was a possibility of a partnership and WBF jumped at the chance.

“For women who are considering a career in the trades, welding is a great opportunity,” said JudyLynn Archer, president & CEO of WBF.

Through this new partnership, WBF will recruit, assess and train eight women and prepare them to be considered for hire by TFL Industrial as apprentice welders. The eight-week program will begin in February 2014, with recruitment starting in October 2013.

WBF has extensive experience recruiting women into the trades and the heavy industrial workforce and has consistently achieved a success rate of 90 per cent or greater for post-program employment.

“I firmly believe that it is industry’s responsibility today to fill the coming trades shortage in the Alberta market of tomorrow. This is TFL’s first step towards fulfilling that responsibility,” said Stewart.

“We are thrilled that TFL Industrial identifies women as a key component to growing their workforce,” said Archer. “This partnership shows what can be achieved when organizations think beyond what’s been done before. We tip our hat to TFL Industrial for their innovation and leader- ship; it is a win-win for everyone involved.”
