Ontario construction employers will face new requirements for protective headwear beginning July 1, 2027, as the province moves toward greater protection from side-impact hazards.

Under amendments to Ontario’s Construction Projects regulation, workers who may be exposed to side-impact hazards will be required to wear Type 2 protective headwear meeting CSA or ANSI standards, or providing equivalent protection. A chin strap or other retention system will also be required where site conditions could cause the headwear to become dislodged. Some of Canada’s largest contractors have already made the transition.

Effective July 1, 2026, the Canadian Construction Safety Council (CCSC) requires Type 2 hard hats with integrated chin straps for all workers, subcontractors and visitors on its members’ project sites across Canada. CCSC members include Aecon, AtkinsRéalis, Bird Construction, Dragados Canada, EllisDon, EBC, Graham Construction, Kiewit, Ledcor Industries, PCL Construction, Pennecon and Pomerleau.
